The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) issued 16 new drilling permits to Kansas Operators during the last week of the year, bringing the total for 2025 to 660 permits. While this indicates steady activity in the oil and gas sector, it is essential to note that this is 503 fewer permits than the 1,163 permits that were issued in 2024, a 43.3% decline. In Kansas, 781 wells were drilled to full depth in 2025, a significant decrease compared to 1,378 wells were drilled in 2024, representing a decline of 43.3%.

The total footage drilled across Kansas, not including the depths of wells currently being drilled, reached 2,098,810 feet in 2025. This is down from 3,3423,053 feet in 2024, reflecting a decline of 38.6%. Currently, the number of active drilling rigs in Kansas stands at 14, five in the Eastern Region and nine in the Western Region. Thirteen rigs are shut down over the holidays. The count is down from 24 active rigs a year ago, a 41.7% decline.

A total of 95 wildcat exploratory wells were drilled in 2025, which is 32 fewer wildcats compared to 2024, a decrease of 25.2%. Wildcat wells accounted for 12.2% of the total wells drilled in 2025, up three percentage points compared to 2024.
